The TD AMERITRADE Institutional UMA Program helps you offer your clients a unified, fee-based product with more investment choices by using Unified Managed Accounts. UMAs are portfolios made up of separate account strategies, mutual funds and exchange traded funds (ETFs) that offer asset allocation all in a single account. They can be ideal for clients who need customized portfolio solutions.
How the program works
This comprehensive program combines all of your clients’ investments into one account with a streamlined, single-sign-on authorization process. With this program, you can offer clients:
- Income management
- Automatic rebalancing
- Individual security/sector restrictions
- Potential tax savings through enhanced tax management capabilities*
- The option of orienting portfolios toward a specific style like growth, value or a combination of both
How can it increase my efficiency?
Both the operations and administrative activities of investments in your clients’ accounts will be handled by Placemark Investments, a third-party, industry-leading, active Overlay Portfolio Manager that launches and runs UMA programs for many of the industry’s top broker/dealers, banks and RIAs.
What is Overlay Portfolio Management?
Overlay Portfolio Management (OPM) is an investment discipline where the trading activities of all the managers and securities in a client’s UMA are coordinated together and customized to the client’s needs. With access to a variety of investment products, overlay managers can tailor and implement robust asset allocations suitable for individual investors at account minimums often below those in separately managed accounts (SMAs).
How your clients may benefit
Clients can simplify their investments by consolidating multiple accounts into a single account. It allows clients to combine separate account strategies, mutual funds and ETFs into one account with one registration. Clients gain:
1. Convenience and simplification:
- One set of account-opening paperwork
- One statement, one performance report and one Form 1099
2. Flexibility:
- Option to choose between separately managed accounts, mutual funds and ETFs
- Automatic rebalancing
3. Control
- Enhanced tax management capabilities

- Consolidation of accounts to facilitate review and management of accounts
How your firm may benefit
Allowing an experienced manager to handle the investments in your clients’ accounts will help you focus on serving your clients and growing your firm. You will also have access to:
- Independent separately managed account (SMA) managers at lower minimums
- Multiple investment products such as SMAs, mutual funds and ETFs
